Alumni Spotlight on Darren Ray
In the Spotlight:
Alumnus Darren Ray
Since starting at Salem Community Hospital part-time as a help desk technician, alumnus Darren Ray gained a full-time appointment and was then promoted to application specialist. Ray decided to study at Kent State University at Salem because he could earn a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Computer Technology, stay close to home, save money and gain work experience at the same time.
Ray, who may not appear as a 'techie' to most, has always had an interest in technology. During high school, he had an idea that computers might be where he wanted to spend his time. "I worked with the technology coordinator at Crestview during study halls to get some experience," he said. At the same time, he helped start a computer club, which he now helps oversee.
While attending classes at Kent State Salem, Ray worked at the Salem Computer Center. "Working in the field is just as important as the education," he said. From January 2010 to the spring of 2011, Ray worked in the technology department of Crestview Local Schools.
Ray said he enjoyed his time at Kent State Salem. "I met a lot of people and had a good time," he said. "It got me to where I wanted to be."
Ray recommends anyone who is interested in his field to not only get a degree, but to get work experience, too. "You'll be more marketable to a company," he said.
