Alumni Spotlight on Jennifer Andres

In the Spotlight:  Jennifer Andres

Kent State University at Salem alumnus Jennifer Andres feels fortunate to work at Salem Junior High as a reading specialist. Attending Kent State Salem and graduating with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, coupled with a reading endorsement, allowed her to stay close to her friends and family. "I'm fortunate I've been able to stay in the area and be close to family," she said. "Because we're in the area, my kids are close to their grandparents."

Jennifer AndresAndres said attending Kent State Salem, one of Kent State University's seven regional campuses, was a great fit for her. "Attending the Salem campus allowed me to be able to work, stay close to home and earn a bachelor's degree," she said. "Plus, it was great not having any debt when I was done – A lot of my friends are still paying off their student loans. The education was affordable."

When she first started class, Andres said she wasn't sure what she wanted to major in. However, because of the individualized attention she received, she decided to pursue a degree in teaching and earn a reading endorsement. "The small classes gave me an opportunity to get to know my professors," she said. "Dr. Tu was one of my mentors and really helped me," she said. "She nominated me for the Outstanding Achievement in Education award in both 2003 and 2004 and has written recommendation letters on my behalf."

Andres said it was Kent State's program that included the reading endorsement, which allowed her to specialize in reading intervention. "Even though it was an additional 12 hours of class, it was a good endorsement to receive," she said.  "It made me more specialized and helped me land the job I have today."

Andres graduated in May of 2006 and was married shortly thereafter. She lives in Salem with her two children and her husband, Jeff, who teaches high school math for Salem City Schools.
