Student Spotlight on Laura Martin
Student Spotlight on:
Kent State junior Laura Martin has come full circle. Martin is currently employed full time at the Fleming House, a family recovery center that provides drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Here, she was first a patient, then an intern and now a full-time residential case manager. While receiving care at the Fleming House, Martin’s case manager encouraged her to keep busy.
“She put a spark in me to get an education,” Martin said. “Her encouragement helped me stay on the right track and brought me closer to my goals.”
Martin’s dedication to living a drug and alcohol free life allowed her to attend Kent State University at Salem and receive her associate’s degree in Human Services Technology in 2009. Currently, she is enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program.
As a full-time employee, student and mother, strict time management is imperative, Martin stated. “It’s all about getting in to a routine, and sticking to it.”
Attending Kent State was one of the best decisions Martin ever made.
“Kent State Salem was a great fit for me. It’s a short drive from my home, and it’s affordable,” Martin said. “What other university has two campuses practically in your own back yard?” As the first member of her family to earn a college degree Martin is excited that her son is also pursuing an education at the Kent campus.
After completing her bachelor’s degree, Martin hopes to continue working full time as a residential case manager at the Fleming House. She would also like to continue her education in a master’s program at Kent State.
