Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), institutions of higher education are restricted in the information that can be released from a student's educational record. A general rule of thumb which will prevent any possible violation of FERPA is do not share a student's information with anyone other than the student. Please refer any requests for student information to the Office of the University Registrar. For additional information on FERPA or the Kent State policies governing collection and dissemination of student's record data please refer to: http://www.kent.edu/registrar/info/records_policy.cfm
Essence of the Act:
- College students must be permitted to inspect their own education record.
- School officials may not disclose personally identifiable information about students nor permit inspection of their records without written permission unless such action is covered by certain exceptions permitted by the Act.
